new recycling scheme launched in Battersea Park

Visitors to Battersea Park can recycle on the move now thanks to a new recycling scheme launched by Fountains and the Council. Twenty-five new recycling bins have been placed in the Park to encourage visitors to recycle more.

Recycling has already been available in Battersea Park in recycling centres in the car parks. But for the first time, Park users will be able to recycle on the go using the bins that have been distributed around the park in ‘hot-spots’ where people are likely to be picnicking or playing sport.

Park users will be able to spot the orange lidded bins, that are branded to be similar to the Council’s orange sack scheme, to make it clear which bins should be used for recycling.

Just like the orange sack scheme, instead of having separate recycling bins for paper, cardboard, glass and plastic, the new bins will manage co-mingled recyclables. Glass, paper, card, plastic bottles, drinks cans, food tins, aerosols and food and drink cartons can all be thrown into the new bins.

Executive member for environment and leisure, Cllr Malcolm Grimston, said, With these new bins, we hope to reduce the amount of general waste that the Council has to dispose of, and contribute to the environment by recycling as much we can. If this trial is a success, we hope to roll out the programme to other Parks in the future. A team from the local Recycle Western Riverside campaign will also be in the park throughout August to raise awareness of the new recycling bins and encourage park users to recycle their rubbish. Alys Dunn, Programmer Manager for the campaign commented The recycling roadshow has lots of fun recycling games and challenges
for children, and our staff will be on hand to provide information and answer any questions that park users might have about the new recycling scheme.

Fountains, the parks and open spaces contractor for Wandsworth Council, have helped to source and launch the scheme and will be responsible for the collection and management of the bins.

The scheme was launched by Cllr Malcolm Grimston and Richard Haddon, Chief Executive at Fountains.
